Child killed, another injured in hit-and-run on Route 5 near Hamburg

HAMBURG, NY – An 8-year-old child lost their life Saturday night, June 8, as a result of a two-vehicle crash near Hamburg that left a 4-year-old hurt, reports WKBW.

Hamburg Police said the collision took place on the eastbound lanes of Route 5 at North Creek Road.

According to a preliminary investigation, a 35-year-old Blasdell resident was driving eastbound when she stopped at North Creek Road. Before she could make a left turn, her vehicle was hit from the back by another car driven by a 52-year-old Angola resident.

An 8-year-old, of Blasberg, was pronounced deceased at the scene, and a 4-year-old child was transported to a local hospital for unspecified injuries. Hamburg Police confirmed that the young child has since been discharged.

The Angola driver, who fled the scene following the incident, was later located in an area backyard where he was hiding. He was taken to Erie County Medical Center for unknown injuries and now faces multiple charges, including “driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated by the combination of alcohol and narcotics, first-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, felony aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a fatal auto accident,” among other violations.

The suspect is currently being held without bail and is expected to appear for a felony hearing on June 13.
